Some might call Kayla and Corbin’s first encounter a lucky strike, as they first met eyes in a bowling alley in high school. “When I first saw Corbin, , he was a mystery and a breath of fresh air. He had a charismatic smile and a friendly demeanor about him, so when he walked into the bowling alley I was immediately drawn to him.” The two started dating their sophomore year – a result of a distracting text message in the middle of a test. Their first official date was the classic combination of dinner and a movie, but Kayla couldn’t tell you much about the plot. Instead, all she could think about was when he was going to make the move.

Over the years, the two had the pleasure of growing up and growing together. “There wasn’t ever this goal to be married. We just enjoyed being together, so we traveled, moved in together, went to college, shared a similar work ethic, and continued to grow as individuals but within our relationship. We just knew we loved each other and wanted to journey through life with one another.” Kayla shares. It was on their eight year anniversary that Corbin popped the exciting question. Enlisting the help of Kayla’s boss to encourage her to take off work, Corbin orchestrated a day trip with friends to Fort Worden. Though there were plenty of signs that something special was going on (from seeing Corbin’s parents to noticing a video cord), it took a suggestion from friends to pose for a picture for Kayla to catch on. Corbin then led with, “It’s not really a coincidence that everyone is here today,” and Kayla’s heart beat began to quicken. He asked her the big question, and it took a while for it to sink in. “It was absolutely surreal actually being in that moment. I couldn’t imagine spending my life with anyone else, and I’m lucky to have found such a fun, loving, easy-going partner to tackle a marriage with.”

Courtney Bowlden was there to beautifully capture their Bellingham wedding that was brimming with joy. Their ceremony was the most memorable factor of the day.  “I rarely took my eyes off his face the entire ceremony, but occasionally I would look over at our officiant and directly behind her was this beautiful windowed dome. We had started our ceremony shortly after the sun set, so I could see a softened reflection of the audience in the windows.” Kayla shares. Being surrounded by loved ones to celebrate the start to “officially forever” made their wedding unforgettable.

They say that love is blind, and blind was exactly what Kendal and Mitch’s first date happened to be. With a great deal of encouraging by Mitch and Kendal’s best friends, a shy senior girl and a recently-graduated gentleman agreed to meet each other for a rather nerve-wracking first date. “My first impression of Mitch was how genuine and funny he was. I remember being so nervous to meet him for the first time. We spent our first date laughing the entire time.” Kendal shares. Mitch was also anxious , but once he laid eyes on her, all of his nerves seemed to dissipate.

Their first solo outing was an evening spent  along the Vancouver waterfront. The date turned out to be not only full of chemistry, but also a little friendly competition. The two played putt putt golf and a lively game of H.O.R.S.E. before Kendal decided to shoot for a first kiss. She scored, and after that, the ball was in Mitch’s court.

Once they began dating, the age-old “absence makes the heart grow fonder” saying proved to be true. The long distance that they experienced while away at college brought them closer to the realization that they wanted to spend the rest of their lives with each other. When it came time for Mitch to officially state his desire, Kendal couldn’t have been more thrilled. “While I was in California, Mitch told me that the night I fly home, he was going to take me out for a date night. He made sure I knew to be dressed and ready as soon as my plane landed. He picked me up from the airport around 6:30pm and we went straight to dinner. After dinner, he told me we were going to watch a movie at his parents. Little did I know, he had set up the entire yard perfectly for the proposal. As soon as we got to the end of the driveway, I noticed a cute lit up pathway, and I instantly knew. The tears had already started flowing! The pathway ended in a gazebo with a table of pictures and a little black box. He then got down on one knee and asked if I would be his forever. This happened just in time for our family and a few close friends to come running outside after witnessing the whole thing. It was so amazing to have the people we care about the most with us witness this perfect proposal!”

Their rustic, backyard wedding was a testament to the natural ease of their relationship.”I wanted our day to be effortlessly fun, simple, and beautiful. I tried to keep things simple and ‘us.’” They also made sure to focus on fun, as they spend a great deal of their time together laughing. When Kendal saw her groom for the first time, she could hardly believe she wasn’t dreaming. “He looked more handsome than I could have ever imagined – what I could see between the tears, of course! I kept saying ‘Is this for real?’” Mitch was also in disbelief when he saw his beautiful bride. “In that moment, it was pure joy. An image I will never forget.”

One of the most special moments of their wedding day was when they took the time to step back and soak it all in. As they looked around the dance floor at all of their friends and family, they couldn’t help but agree that it had been an absolute dream wedding. Their  dream is only just beginning, too. “No matter what kind of day I have had, I always get to come home to Mitch.” Mitch agrees, sharing that the best part of marriage is being able to finish each day with his best friend.

An engagement marks the beginning of the most beautiful journey, and there’s no better way to capture the spirit of traveling together than with a sweet exploration-inspired engagement shoot set in the beautiful surroundings of Salmon la Sac. From the sweet cabin-side shots to the adorable save the date map, the adventurous spirit of love fills each of the images captured by the talented Samantha McFarlen. As if that didn’t sound charming enough, the couple even brought along their dog as an additional guide.

Any time a couple wants to go on an adventure for their engagement session, I get really excited. Katie, Kyle and their dog met me, my husband and our dog out at the campground and we just took off into the woods, stopping at cool spots to take photos. We hit a few different locations, let the dogs play, and then had beers together at the world famous Brick Saloon in Roslyn. It’s cheesy, but I really enjoy my job because I get to share in these special times in my clients’ lives not only as their photographer but as their friend. Katie has such an amazing vision for her wedding and I can’t wait to photograph it in just 5 short months!” – Samantha McFarlen
